PROJECT INFORMATION
Located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, this brownstone townhouse had immense potential waiting to be unlocked. Our primary objective for the project was to re-envision the kitchen area, as the original layout was cramped and unfunctional. To transform the space, we removed a wall separating the kitchen and dining areas to create an open and welcoming room, seamlessly combining functionality and flow.
Keeping and restoring the original tin ceilings and hardwood floors, we drew inspiration from the ivy covered wall outside by using a textured green wallpaper, evoking an organic vibe, and bringing the outside in. We also created arched niches for added depth, with a subtle nod to the pre-war design of the building.
The focal point of the design was to create a large kitchen island with pendant lighting, tailored to my client’s needs. This included a breakfast counter, under counter microwave, spice rack and cookbook storage, pull out trash and recycling cabinets, and deep drawers for pots and pans. A tall pantry was added next to the stove for convenient storage, along with a recessed section for other kitchen appliances to free up countertop space. Together, these elements created a kitchen that is both visually appealing and ideal for everyday living.
In addition, one of my client’s requirements was to have an area for their child to play while they were in the kitchen. We therefore utilized one of the arched niches in the expanded kitchen area to create a dedicated space for them, complete with a built-in storage cabinet, bench with storage below, and plenty of room for a kids table and chairs. It gave their child a fun, playful area to hang out, and allowed my clients to keep everything neat and in order with all the storage space for toys.
In the living room, we expanded the chimney wall to incorporate the TV, and centered it in the room. The design also involved extending the original wall molding and incorporating a custom-built shelving bookcase for added style and utility.
For the children’s bedroom, we wanted to create dedicated storage for the growing collection of belongings, toys and books, as well as an area for homework. We designed a highly customized bookcase, enclosed storage, and an integrated desk with lighting, to keep everything in order.
